Union Suing to Stop Right-to-Work
Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller says the state believes lawmakers were within their authority to pass a right-to-work law, and he will defend a lawsuit challenging its constitutionality. Committee Clears Inheritance Tax Bill
An Indiana House Committee has approved a plan to phase out the state's inheritance tax. State Senator Brandt Hershman (R-7) is the sponsor of the bill. He says the tax is a "deterrent" to keeping retirees and entrepreneurs in Indiana. The bill now goes to the full House.

Senate Committee Passes Smoking Ban
The Indiana Senate Public Policy Committee has passed a statewide smoking ban. The proposal would prohibit smoking in most workplaces. The bill now heads to the full Senate.

Crossroads Receives EDC Grant
The LaGrange County Economic Development Corporation has awarded a grant of $50,000 to Topeka, Indiana-based Crossroads RV. The manufacturer announced in December plans to expand operations and create up to 250 jobs by 2014.

Indiana Papers to Charge For Online Content
Four Indiana newspapers owned by Gannett Co. Inc. (NYSE: GCI) will begin charging for online content by the end of the year. Gannett says it expects the new model to bring in $100 million in revenue per year beginning in 2013. Gannett owns The Indianapolis Star, the Journal and Courier in Lafayette, the Star Press in Muncie and the Palladium-Item in Richmond.

Hillenbrand Chairman to Retire
A change is coming within the board of directors of Batesville-based Hillenbrand Inc. (NYSE: HI). Chairman Ray Hillenbrand and Vice Chairman James Henderson will retire from the board at the company's 2013 shareholders meeting. Retired Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) President Joseph Loughrey will become board chairman.

Columbus-based Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) has announced a joint venture in Central America. Cummins Centroamerica is a partnership with Grupo Laeisz to distribute the Indiana company's engines, generators and parts in countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador and Honduras.

Massive Hospital Project Nearly Complete
A more than half-billion dollar hospital project in Fort Wayne is almost finished. The $550 million Parkview Regional Medical Center is set to open in less than a month. Parkview officials say the facility will have "smart rooms" that can alert caregivers to safety issues, and will be equipped with more than 20 robots to deliver food, medicine and other supplies.

Hospitals Announce Cardiology Agreement
Three Indiana hospitals have announced a partnership aimed at increasing the quality and availability of cardiology services. Hancock Regional Hospital, Hendricks Regional Health and St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana say the agreement will benefit patients throughout Hancock and Hendricks counties.

Rose-Hulman Students Win Cyber Competition
A group of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology students won Indiana's Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. The contest calls on teams to defend a business network infrastructure against professional "hackers." The team now moves on to the regional competition in Chicago.

City's New Abatement Rules Take Effect
Members of the Richmond Common Council have approved their first project under new tax abatement rules. Wilson Dairy Products Inc. has received a 10 year abatement on a $12 million expansion that is expected to create 11 jobs and retain more than 100. The Richmond Palladium-Item reports the new system can allow for a 100 percent abatement based on expansion and job creation plans.

'Credit Creep' Bill Clears Senate
A bill dealing with so-called "credit creep" has passed the Indiana Senate. The proposal gives the Indiana Commission for Higher Education the option to reject bachelor's degree programs requiring more than 120 hours and associate's degrees of more than 60. The bill now heads to the House.

College Transfers Could Get Easier
The Indiana House and Senate have approved a bill that could simplify the college course transfer process. The proposal would require the Indiana Commission for Higher Education to create a common course numbering system for all state institutions. The bill heads to Governor Mitch Daniels' desk, and if passed, would take effect next year.

A longtime Emmis Publishing executive is retiring. Deborah Paul has been serving as executive vice president and editorial director with the publishing arm of the Indianapolis-based communications company. Los Angeles magazine Editor-in-Chief Mary Melton is expected to become the new editorial director of Emmis Publishing.
